STAFF TRAINING AND SUPPORTS
“H&W offers a systematic, easy to understand format to teach Administrators and Direct Care staff [about regulations and survey expectations] and I find they respond well to a new voice with the same message. These resources have been invaluable to our agency.” Private Agency Director of OperationsTestimonial 1
“As a manager, I recognize the importance of providing staff with the “tools” they need to do their jobs ~ having the information they need helps to make them confident and competent in carrying out the responsibilities of their positions. [H&W Publications are] the best resource I’ve found to teach staff about the concepts of Active Treatment and the corresponding implementation expectations. The manual also serves as a valuable resource to help staff understand the survey process and how to prepare for surveys (which helps with their comfort level when the surveyors arrive). Highly recommended reading!”Private Agency, Program Manager

“We found the guide [The Surveyors are Coming: Now What?] an excellent resource. As much as we prepare constantly throughout the year for the surveyors, surveys always bring surprises and unexpected findings. We have found the guide to be an excellent go to document for quick, applicable brush-up answers.”Private Agency Executive Director
REGULATORY SUPPORTS AND SERVICES
“I just absolutely loved this experience & gained so much information I hope to help [the agency] with. I loved the H&W mentor/surveyors and greatly appreciate their patience with me and my questions.”
“Training was great and provided a lot of information; probably the best training I have received. I was glad to have been a part of it.”
“I have enjoyed the hands on portion, observing on the homes, meals and med pass as well. However, I feel that the most effective part has been the classroom portion and group discussion. I have learned so much with the material provided and the questions that have been answered.”
“This was such an eye-opening experience that I could not offer any suggestions for change as this training was very educational and productive.”
“Very eye opening experience. After doing the observations in the home it was clear that it is extremely easy to be desensitized to the problems that surround this facility.”
“Every component I experienced this week will benefit me. The mentor was exceptional. The debriefings w/explanations were great.”
“The most beneficial part of the mock survey was the lessons in Observation and Interviewing. It is not common practice for the facility to train managerial staff in these observation and interview skills. In addition, the training we received in interpreting the W-tags was beneficial to know exactly what surveyors are looking for.”Public Agency Staff regarding H&W Training Mock Surveys
AGENCY SUPPORTS AND SERVICES
“H&W Independent Solutions has been working in the [State] for over two years. During that time, they have demonstrated a clear ability to assemble a team of over twenty high quality consultants who are knowledgeable about ICF/MR [ICF/IID] and Department of Justice (DOJ) and who were appropriate to the needs and scope of the work required. H&W coordinated the work and reports of their team which resulted in a clear and specific report and with recommendations…
H&W principals and their consultants have demonstrated a comprehensive knowledge of ICF/MR [ICF/IID] regulations, how these regulations are interpreted by surveyors and of DOJ expectations. They worked closely with both the state and [facility] staff to develop and implement these projects. In addition, they have respected all requests to protect the confidentially of the findings. After completing their assessments, they developed an extensive report, with recommendations for each of the [facilities], for technical assistance for the [state system] and for the future of state operations.”State Director of the Division of Developmental Disability Services
“Beyond their work as consultants to [public residential agency], H&W has provided guidance and support directly to our organization. Mark [Wiesel] assisted [our organization] in the development of public policy statements and the education and training of our members in the advocacy process…. On short, I express my support for H&W in the pursuit of projects intended to both improve operations at facilities like [our public residential agency] and particularly commend their abilities to bring all the players together to support our family members with disabilities.”President, Local Friends and Family Agency
ABUSE AND NEGLECT SYSTEMS SUPPORTS
“Over the past two years, H&W’s president, Catherine Hayes, has provided high quality consulting and training services pertaining to compliance with laws and regulations at both the state and federal levels.
Ms. Hayes was jointly selected by [the] State’s Attorney General’s Office and the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) to perform on-site monitoring of risk management and quality assurance systems at a large state-operated institution for individuals with developmental disabilities. Her analysis and report was insightful, and provided a series of very practical and understandable recommendations for improvements to our systems to meet the conditions of our agreements with DOJ. The facility is in the process of implementing Ms. Hayes’ recommendations, and staff are finding them to be of great value in their effort to improve systems and services related to risk management and Quality Assurance.”Senior Counsel, State Office of Attorney General
“…I purchased your abuse/neglect modules and gave a copy to our client rights advocate… Our last survey-first time we had the whole campus surveyed because we went to one license- we had 2 deficiencies. The one was our abuse and neglect policy does not specifically address how the facility would prevent further abuse if the alleged perpetrator was not suspended. So [she] used the information from your [publication] to help rewrite our policy and incorporate some of it into her Rights, and Abuse neglect training especially the [corrections] we will be doing as part of our POC. So you see you don’t write [materials] in vain – folks like us really count on it!”Public Residential Agency Superintendent
